Heat Treat Oven/Laser Engraver/ Surface Grinder Operator

Job Title:  Heat Treat Oven/Laser Engraver/ Surface Grinder Operator

Hourly Position: Required 40-hour work week

Standard Work Hours:  Monday through Friday 6:30am to 3:00pm (Flex Scheduling Optional ie. 4 10-hour days)

Reports to: Machine Shop Lead

Works closely with: Engineering, Quality Management, Assembly, and Inventory and Materials

Position Summary:

Under general direction from the Machine Shop Lead, the operator is responsible for all aspects of heat treating, laser engraving, and surface grinding to meet the desired specifications.  Ensures that all settings are proper to achieve the respective specifications.  Will load and unload stock to respective machines and maintain a safe work environment. Depending on workload, will be required to other task orientated jobs such as polishing, carbide cutting, or assisting in needed areas. Entry level position with the room to master the area and be responsible for throughput at the same time as gaining experience and being able to move up within the company. Needs to be able to handle and have a good attitude in a fast paced, on the go environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • The ability to multi-task while working in a safe manner.  At no times shall safe work practices be compromised.
  • Load and unload stock to furnace, laser engraver, and surface grinder
  • Wrap and unwrap different tool steels, load and unload parts from various heat treat furnaces, program furnaces in accordance with documented and proven recipes, and monitor temperatures between loads.
  • Laser engraves manufactured parts with required information from print which includes running existing programs and the ability to create new programs.
  • Operate surface grinder including setting up parts and making needed adjustments according to measurements.
  • Work from and in accordance with specifications and design criteria including but not limited to verbal instructions, shop orders, and drawings; performs standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work.
  • Ensure drawings match order requests
  • Responsible for safe operation of equipment and make sure preventative maintenance items have been performed on the equipment to be used
    • Work with maintenance to perform preventative maintenance on equipment
    • Complete a Maintenance Request Form when necessary and advise immediate supervisor of any immediate problems
  • Monitors the quality of the material produced.
    • Notify the shop manager of any problems in manufacturing the product
    • Accurately complete necessary paperwork such as Quality Check lists
    • Ability to learn and use measuring equipment such as calipers, micrometers, height gage, and hardness tester.
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations including:
    • Notifies immediate supervisor of any unsafe conditions in the workplace
    • Safety glasses
    • Ear plugs (if required)
    • Steel toe shoes
    • Heat Protectant
    • Practice good housekeeping habits
    • Follow procedural guidelines in all areas of operation
  • Prepare and maintain daily timecard utilizing the Shop System with complete information on accomplished tasks
  • Subject to any and all miscellaneous work-related duties requested by immediate supervisor

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Equivalent to high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two years of machine shop experience.
  • Ability to understand and measure hardness of parts
  • Basic knowledge of machine shop equipment and processes used in a manufacturing environment.
  • Read and interpret shop drawings
  • Demonstrates basic math skills with use of a calculator.
  • Considerable experience in mechanical trouble shooting.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and complete tasks independently
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with staff.
  • High degree of personal initiative
  • Resourceful, accurate and highly organized with an attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to manage, prioritize and balance multiple tasks
  • Must be flexible, able to adjust schedule and pitch-in as needed

Physical and Environmental Elements:

  • This is a production department classification and employee’s work in a plant environment with moderate to high noise levels, non-controlled temperature conditions and must stand and/or walk for approximately 6 – 8 hours per shift and lift to 65 lbs.

Manufacturing Manager

Position Summary:

The Manufacturing manager is responsible for general supervision of all phases of plant operations including production, quality control, inventory control, shipping and receiving, maintenance, manufacturing engineering and safety.

Salary Position: Minimum 45 hour work week

Standard Work Hours:    Monday – Friday

Reports to: President

Works closely with: Sales, Finance, Engineering, Production Control, Purchasing, Inventory Control, Machine Shop, and Assembly

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership for the successful day-to-day operation of the facility
  • Review established production schedules for all manufacturing departments to ensure established dates are met or exceeded while operating at the highest efficiency possible.
  • Coordinate the hiring and training of all manufacturing personnel
  • Conduct performance appraisal and provide coaching and guidance to all personnel
  • Encourage and promote operating in a continuous improvement environment,
  • Work with President or controller to develop and execute the plant manufacturing budgets.
  • Monitor manufacturing operation expenses and research ways to reduce costs while maintaining product quality.
  • Work closely with quality personnel to review product consistency while monitoring scrap rates to determine trends and areas of improvement
  • Remove waste and constraints from the production process to improve efficiencies and enhance productivity
  • Work closely with the Safety Coordinator to ensure all members of Proto -1 are aware of safety policies to provide a safe workplace for our employees, customers, and suppliers.
  • Maintain and support a superior safety and housekeeping program, including all timely communication initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:

  •  10+ years progressive experience in a key leadership/management role at a manufacturing facility
  • Completed training program in Business/Management/ Manufacturing Operations, CNC Machining, or other related field and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate people, assess and develop employee skills.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, with the ability to balance production and maintenance needs.
  • Previous experience/best practices implementing and using continuous improvement/lean tools such as: Six Sigma, 5-S, Lean Manufacturing, etc. to drive improvement.
  • Ability to work with teams and lead decision-making processes in a team environment
  • Highly motivated, results oriented, willing to take calculated risks, driven to succeed.
  • Previous experience/broad understanding of safety systems, manufacturing maintenance, machine shop / machining background, strong knowledge of proper machining procedures.
  • Strong computer skills including the ability to prepare spreadsheets and use Microsoft Office Products to analyze data and trends.

Position Summary: Under general direction from the Machine Shop Lead, manufacture parts using many different types of machines/tools in a large machine shop; fabricates various types and sizes of steel according to specifications based on client’s expectations, work standards, and Proto-1 quality standards.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Performing highly skilled and high-precision machine and bench work as required, utilizing CNC lathes, milling machines, grinding machines, drilling machines, and metal saws
  • Work from and in accordance with specifications and design criteria including but not limited to verbal instructions, shop orders, and drawings; performs standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, speeds, and feeds of machining. Ensure drawings match order requests
  • Responsible for safe operation of equipment and make sure preventative maintenance items have been performed on the equipment to be used
  • Monitors the quality of the material produced.
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Equivalent to high school diploma or general education degree (GED)
